It’s 91°F outside and humidity’s about 121% (it feels).
I’ve been listening to the confirmation hearings for Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court, which have just ended (4 pm EST) and thinking about just how hot the political atmosphere is in the US and the world.
US:
Continued high unemployment
Continuing mortgage defaults on middle-class homes (hmm.... any relation to the first one?)
Continued corporate shenanigans (the financial, oil, banking, pharmaceutical and defense industries)
Continued military presence in Iraq & Afghanistan (definitely some relation to the previous one)
Continued partisanship resulting in gridlock and the ignoring of common-sense economists such as Nobel winner Paul Krugman for twitter-chasing soundbites about “cutting the deficit”
Continued crumbling of our infrastructure (thanks largely to the above)
Continued anti-freedom activism by Roberts Court (today on gun laws; see below for campaign finance)
Continued bigotry against GLBT individuals, and continuing Second-Class Status for us fortunate to have been born as GLBT.
WORLD:
Continued military presence in Iraq & Afghanistan
Continued corporate shenanigans
Continuing poverty, illiteracy, sickness and death by genocide, torture, poverty, and just plain apathy.
Engulf (it affects more than just us, America)
Israel. Syria. Jordan. Iran. Hell, the whole Mideast.
Global warming and climate change
Currency manipulation, noncompliance with nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation treaties
Terrorist acts by every ilk, stripe, income level and political agenda intended to blackmail the rest of the world into compliance with the demands of thugs.
And summer’s just begun.
