what America will I find?

Went to see “The White Ribbon” Sunday. One of the most depressing, unsettling, profoundly unsatisfying movies I’ve seen in a long time... and images I will not be able to get out of my mind for a long time to come.

Life feels a little joyless right now - not personally; I love my Other more than ever. I mean... all the people I run into during the day, all of them have a kind of numb grimness, and joylessness, in their faces. There is no joy in Mudville....

Roger Cohen, in his excellent NYT Op-Ed piece ("A Woman Burns," January 25, 2010) manages to tell the true consequences of People versus Power while at the same time searing the imagination forever with the blackened face of Tang Fuzhen.

We are all caught on that burning roof, I fear, by the greed and the pride of the powerful, and by the cowardice of leaders who are complicit with or afraid of them.

People of Earth, I implore you: insist your government adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights while there is still time to avoid the jackboots.
